Major Parry was fifty-five, and, like Gorse’s friend Ronnie, he drank and talked and thought about women in a silly way too much.
This was largely because, unknown to himself or to anyone, he was undergoing a change of life – what is now well known as menopause. This agitating condition was then, and by an enormous amount of people still is, supposed to be confined to women; but nothing in fact is further from the case. Though the physical and mental symptoms are less obvious, men are victimized by this disorder as much as women, and often with as serious, or more serious consequences. Men constantly run away from their long-married and virtuous wives under the influence of this disorder.
