They had come to her when she was eight years old and placed a pair of spectacles on that face, which of course had finished off the joke that God, forgetting mercy, had begun. At eight years of age she was just becoming conscious of the face, just beginning to realize that whatever else lay there it was not her fortune. He spectacles had drawn greater attention to it, picking it out in the classroom, marking it down as an object for closer examination.
