Twenty-Nine Years Old - Hedda Tesman (née Gabler)

Hedda Tesman (née Gabler) 29

HEDDA enters the rear room from the left, and comes into the drawing-room. She is a woman of twenty-nine. Distinguished, aristocratic face and figure. Her complexion is pale and opalescent. Her eyes are steel-grey, with an expression of cold, calm serenity. Her hair is handsome auburn colour, but is not especially abundant. She is dressed in an elegant, somewhat loose-fitting morning gown.

MISS TESMAN (goes to greet her). Good morning, Hedda dear! Good morning!

HEDDA (holds out her hand). Good morning, dear Miss Tesman. What an early hour to call. So kind of you.

MISS TESMAN (seems somewhat embarrassed). And has the young bride slept well in her new home?

HEDDA. Oh – thank you. Passably well.

TESMAN (laughs). Passably? I say. Hedda, that’s good!  When I jumped out of  bed you were sleeping like a top.

HEDDA. Yes. Fortunately. One has to accustom oneself to anything new, Miss Tesman. It takes time.
