Cavaillon 22
Cavaillon, young but already famous in the music-hall world, is envied by everyone there. They say of him that ‘Dranem is afraid of him’, and that ‘he earns whatever he chooses’. We have run into this tall young man of twenty-two once or twice already; he walks like a human serpent, as though he had no bones, his heavy fists swinging at the end of his wrists. His face, under his fair hair cut in a fringe, is almost pretty, but his mauve glance, anxious and restless, reveals acute neurasthenia, near to madness. His favourite expression is: ‘I’m killing myself.’ He spends his whole day waiting until it is time for his act, and while it lasts he forgets, enjoys himself, and carries the public away. He neither drinks nor goes on the loose. He invests his money and is bored.
